Chapter 9

Quinton finished her breakfast and headed back to her room but knew that she had absolutely no constructive answer for what she had just tried to do. How did she attempt to build a bridge when nothing on either side existed to hold it? She’d heard from others, Shane especially, who was concerned about her rehab progress, given her problems with Stan.

Finally she’d broken down and asked Shane, “What difference does it make?”

And Shane’d turned on her and had let her know exactly what difference it made, how the entire community was affected when something like this went wrong. And it was up to the adults—and he’d emphasized adults quite harshly—to smooth things over so that there was at least civility.

Civility.

How could she have civility when her heart was breaking? And yet, from what she understood, it wasn’t just her heart breaking.

Shane had told her, “I get you don’t want anything to do with him on that level. That’s fine, but you guys were great friends, and what a shame that you’ve lost that now too.”

She didn’t know how to tell him that she didn’t know what she was feeling or how to deal with this. It’s not a scenario that she’d ever found herself in before, but it was terrible. All of it was terrible. And it just made her feel even worse. She sat here this morning, alone, outside, eating her breakfast, wondering how she was supposed to pick up and fix this.

When she realized that really the best answer was to leave.

She didn’t have to come back. Her brother was barely talking to her. She had always stopped in to speak to Stan, but she’d blown that now too. Swearing at herself, she pushed away from the table and headed back to her room. And Shane found her less than twenty minutes later, packing her bags, fully dressed, ready to check out.

He stepped into the middle of her room and looked at her. “Since when is running away an answer?”

She stiffened. “If there’s no progress and no sign that progress will continue,” she replied, “what’s the point of staying here? I’m just taking a bed from somebody.”

“You know what? I’ve heard that from you many times,” he murmured. “Why is it that you think that you don’t deserve the best of the best, the same as everybody else gets?”

“Because I had it once,” she said, looking at him in surprise. “Why should I get it twice?”

“Why shouldn’t you?” he murmured. “What’s wrong with your thinking that only allows you one time to get things right?”

“A lot,” she said in a sad voice. “And way too much for me to begin to talk about.”

“So then, before you walk away,” Shane stated, “I think you owe us a chance to talk to your psychologist here.”

She immediately shook her head. “No, not going there.”

“And I’m going to ask you as a friend and as somebody who stepped up and made sure that this bed happened so that you could actually heal and improve to the point where we could get you back on your feet.
